New Elettrica electric vehicle take on GWiz and NICE Mega City on London streets
Today, Future Vehicles in UK, best known for retrofitting original Minis with electric running gear, announced that they'd be making the first electric car actually manufactured in UK. While India-made GWizzes and French NICE are abound in central London, the tiny Elettrica will be able to offer more range, taking two passengers up to 70 miles on a single charge - as opposed to 50 like the NICE or Gwiz.
The added range is thanks to a Lithium battery. The GoinGreen and their GWiz expect to offer these on new models and as upgrades in early 2008. Another important feature of the Elettrica, if you like living, is the safety. The GWiz got into some hot water because, since these EVs aren't classed as cars by the EU, the safety standards are pretty lax. Future Vehicles created a safety 'shell' for the Elettrica similar to the on Smart ForTwos.
The Lithium-powered Elettrica will gost £12,750 inc VAT - compare that to the newly-reduced cost of £7,299 for the AC-drive GWiz or around £10K for a Mega City - both can (uncomfortably) seat four. Expect to see these funky-looking green machines on the streets of London soon. Test drives are already being scheduled in the capital. Check out the link when you click the title.

i know it should be enviromently friendly but I just cannot imagine driving something like that, Could you?
The range seems workable as does the price, though I didn't see a top speed listed. I'm also curious if there's any chance of these coming to the U.S..
Hi M,
First off, thanks for commenting on Basic Transportation. More people oughts!
I should have mentioned this EV's top speed and I'll tell you why I didn't. The Elettrica goes up-to about 45mph. So no chance of it coming to US. And the reason I forgot to mention it is because, the GWiz only goes about 45mpg and so does the NICE Mega City. All, sadly, restricted to city driving.
So hold out for the Tango or a Tesla, both from the Bay Area, both really fast, both so expensive that only George Clooney has one.
Your opinion: what's going to be the first 'Prius Killer' the first EV everyone will want?
Best,
Alex
Also - I heard it improves my google score if I insert http://basictransportation.blogspot.com in the comments!
Saw a few of these in Italy last year; a couple in Florence, and one in Portofino. They were turning heads with admiring glances wherever they went. And when you see one, you'll be hard pressed not to gasp in amazement. They are to a normal two seater car, what an Apple Mac is to Windows. They're just gorgeous!
I think these electric cars are great.
Pretty nice place you've got here. Thanx for it. I like such topics and everything that is connected to them. BTW, why don't you change design :).
